World Shop
Sand in Taufers
History and Relocation
In 1988, a dedicated group of people from Taufers founded the third world shop in South Tyrol and Italy. For three and a half decades, it served as an important hub for fair trade and global issues in the "Johanneshaus" of the parish.
After 35 years outside the village, the world shop has now moved into the heart of the village, into the so-called Stabeler House on Josef-Jungmann-Straße. More than 100 years ago, the mountaineer Johann Niederwieser (1853–1902) lived in this house.
On June 8, 2024, the world shop was officially opened at its new location. 25 volunteers work at the World Shop Sand in Taufers. Helga Steinkasserer Oberhofer is the president of the association, which is called "Eine Welt Gruppe Taufers." Heidi Mair am Tinkhof supports the volunteers as a professional staff member.

The Municipality Becomes a Fair Trade Town
In conjunction with the new opening of the shop, the municipality of Sand in Taufers was awarded the title "Fair Trade Town" as the fourth municipality in South Tyrol. This recognition honors the commitment of people in trade, gastronomy, and public institutions such as municipal administration, schools, and churches to fair trade and the promotion of fair trade products.
For years, the municipality has been giving fair trade products from the world shop as gifts to elderly people on milestone birthdays and purchasing gifts for other events. Trade and gastronomy are already partially purchasing fair trade products. The world shop has been working with schools for 35 years, with visits and return visits taking place.

The world shop organizes an annual soup event in the Taufers parish hall with a social purpose. In the future, the municipality intends to engage even more strongly with fair trade issues. In addition to fair trade practices and fair wages, this includes environmental protection, transparency, gender equality, and opportunities for disadvantaged producers. These are issues that affect not only the Global South but also structures and businesses here at home.
Staff members and those responsible are convinced that the world shop will continue to play an important role in the social and economic fabric of the municipality and make a significant contribution to promoting fair trade and global solidarity in the Tauferer Ahrntal.
