World Shop Merano
Volunteering and awareness-raising
The World Shop Merano was founded in 1991 and opened in the Steinach district, Merano’s oldest neighbourhood.
Since 1996, the shop has been located in a courtyard behind the Vinschg Gate. It is run by a non-profit social cooperative (ONLUS) chaired by Klaudia Resch and employs two part-time staff members: the managing director Heidi Nussbaumer and Rosmarie Ennemoser.
Of course, the work of the many volunteers is indispensable. They regularly take shifts in the shop or actively support fair trade in other ways. They are the backbone of the World Shop and contribute significantly to its (economic) success, helping to ensure that many customers remain loyal to the shop and that new ones keep coming. The aim of the World Shop is to make itself redundant. “If we could buy only fairly traded products in all shops, there would be no need for world shops anymore,” explains one volunteer.
In the shop, we offer only high-quality fair trade products (food, all kinds of crafts, gift ideas, clothing and much more), along with appropriate advice. This also includes providing information about the nature of fair trade. However, this does not happen only in the shop: we also take advantage of many opportunities outside (e.g. the Emergency Festival) to bring our fair products to the public. In addition, the World Shop (also together with other organisations in and around Merano) regularly organises events on various topics related to fair trade. In 2021, we celebrated our 30th anniversary.
